Here's another fine piece. This is an original, rarely seen 1:1 scale original Predator 2 Combi-Stick Spear replica "master" created by Icons Authentic Replicas.
This stunning and dynamic quality piece was molded off of a screen-used original created by the Academy Award winning special effects shop, Stan Winston Studios, for the hit sequel to Predator. Icons was provided access to a production-used stunt Combi-Stick Spear for a brief time for it to be studied, reverse engineered, molded, cast in 1630 hard-set resin to create this authentic replica of the original.
The spear itself is a very interesting piece. The main body is cast in one complete section, but the very sharp alien arrowheads are all attached individually in a cluster, which creates a very intense alien weapon effect. The weight of the piece is heavy, yet light enough to still have a good feeling of balance to the piece.
The spear, as you can see in the pic above, has extreme detail, which is a testament to the amazing talent of the Stan Winston Studio's sculptors. There can be no doubt that the original stunt version of this prop was molded directly off of the functioning Hero prop utilized in the filming of Predator 2. There are multiple unique features to the main body portion of the spear, including what appears to be a Predator alien instrument panel reminiscent of the gauntlet control mechanisms seen in the first and second Predator films. The piece seems to be biomechanical in design, in that it has textures and accents reminiscent of bones and veins.
Icons release of the Predator Helmet, Predator Throwing Disc and Combi-Stick Spear was the first time any Predator 1:1 scale motion picture replicas were ever produced that were licensed, authorized and authenticated by 20th Century Fox Studios. Though, Master Replicas reproduced the Predator disc and spear, the unique alien wall rack that Icons created was not offered by them.
The Icons Predator Helmet wall rack, Throwing Disc and Combi-Stick Spear wall rack were all designed by Icons creative and product development departments to create the effect of a Predator spacecraft armory display. Each of these three dynamic pieces were hand sculpted from scratch by a film and television craftsman. The latter two of these were sculpted by the supervisor of the Icons Fabrication and Design group (1998-99), who went on to work on The Scorpion King, Van Helsing, Kingdom of Heaven, Underworld : Revolutions, after the closure of Icons.
I heard that less than 50 Predator Combi-Stick prop replica spears were ever sold or shipped by Icons.
When the Predator Helmet, Throwing Disc and Combi-Stick props are displayed together on a wall, it is a striking display, to say the least.
I don't know where you are getting your "Facts" but your information is wrong.
ReplyDeleteWhile working at Icons Fabrication and Design Group, I designed and Sculpted the Base for the Predator Helmet, I also restored the Helmet itself to make it more accurate to the Film Helmet because it was missing detailed parts on the sides of the Helmet. I consulted with FX Artists that worked on the original Movie "Predator" and they approved the details I added.
As for the other Wall mount Displays those were obviously (If you look closely, you can see the same details) created by cutting up copies of My original Wall-mount Sculpt and re-arranging them into different designs, which were then molded for duplication.
Hi Dave,
ReplyDeleteIf you re-read what is written above it states that the "latter 2 ( The Disc and Combi-stick ) racks" were custom sculpted by the supervisor of Icons Fab & Design, who was Brian Bero. No one has ever informed us that Brian "cut up and rearranged" the Icons Predator Helmet Rack that you sculpted. As you know the Disc and Combi-stick racks were fabricated after your brief tenure at Icons. Yes, we know that you were the sculptor on the Icons Predator Helmet wall rack. We've seen your posts on the RPF. Thanks regardless for visiting this blog site and for your comment. That what this site is for. We are always open to additional informations, corrections & suggestions etc. And happy to give credit where it is due.
Best,
Fred
