Icons Battlestar Galactica Viper

Less than 100 BG Vipers were made and shipped. All Richard Hatch Signature style. Sales were very poor on this item !!!

The Viper was molded directly off of collector Fuller French's screen-used original Viper. So it WAS 1:1 scale and paint job was accurate.

This model was a debate at Icons as some of the staff wanted the crude version, with black painted cockpit and others wanted the detailed version. Al Zequeira said...."please" !!!! He cut an Icons X-Wing pilot in half and put it inside of a bad casting of a Viper to show people what it would look like with a pilot and detailed cockpit. Al won.... :-)

So, three prototypes of the Viper fighter were made at Icons. The 1st one had a solid painted canopy. The 2nd was a vacuform canopy with a pilot's head and upper shoulder area visible. The 3rd (and final Icons production model) was a detailed cockpit interior with dashboard, seat and fully detailed pilot including joystick.

Early Battlestar Galactica Viper miniature Icons COA prototypes.

From left to right, some rare, very early, never-used Battlestar Galactica Viper miniature Icons Replica COA prototypes generated sometime in 1996. You can see they were rendered during the initial stages of Icons creating it's COA's with the simple graphics / placement / layout.

They are one-of-a-kind from what I know, which were promptly rejected for being too simple (except the one on the right which is the final and approved version). But it demonstrates the design evolution of Icons graphics for their replica COA's.

Here is a picture of an Icons Viper casting, casted from an original filming miniature, before being assembled and painted.....thank you very much to Max Cervantes for that picture 👍

A picture of the late Richard Hatch when he was selling his own Icons Viper replica on ebay, some years ago......R.I.P.

  2. This piece to me is flawless. And really set the bar as far as quality goes. One of the first Battlestar Galactica licensed replicas released long before the new TV series was even a dream. Gorgeous piece !

  3. Hatch is wearing the Colonial Flight Jacket from his pitch trailer for BSG: Second Coming. That was a great experience to work on it with him, as well as many other talented people. He used my #19 Viper model and two others for some forced perspective shots in the hangar.

  4. Sales were not poor, product quantity was poor. I could have sold hundreds of these myself if I could have gotten the product. I ordered a dozen different ICONS products and only got the #19 Viper.
