Icons BTTF 2 Mattel Hoverboard "Master"/Prototype

Here's another rare and outstanding find, the original Back to the Future 2 Mattel Hoverboard product "master" and prototype graphic produced by the replica company Icons, back in 1997 before the company closed its doors forever.

This Universal Studios licensed 1:1 scale authentic replica of the original prop Mattel Hoverboard used on screen by Michael J. Fox in the blockbuster sequel to Back to the Future, was developed by Icons brilliant and talented in-house research, fabrication, design and development group which consisted of professional film and television craftspeople. Including a recognized expert on the Back to the Future Trilogy (Rob Klein), who oversaw the prototyping of this never released limited edition collectible.

This item consists of a 1630 hard-set poly-resin "master" casting of an original Hoverboard used in the movie. This product "master" was designed to yield many quality silicone molds that would then be utilized to create a production line of Mattel Hoverboards replicas. Yet, it can be primed and painted pink like the Hero prop seen in the film. Also included are 3 x 1630 hard-set poly-resin "master" castings of the hover mechanism seen on the bottom of the Hero Mattel Hoverboard prop. Lastly, there is a beautifully designed and executed full-color multi-layered lenticular graphic which is really something amazing to examine up close. It's constructed of layer upon layer of print graphics and Velcro stripping just like the original.

I was told that the lenticular portion of this graphic was extremely difficult to locate and took many months to track down back in 1997. Icons had direct access to the Hero Mattel Hoverboard used in the making of this popular film for reference. Note : the graphic is in good condition, but it is not perfect due to the fact that this graphic was the study prototype, it was not preserved in pristine condition like many of the prototypes from Icons that we can see here. But it still looks gorgeous when applied to the Hoverboard's upper surface area.

This is a beautiful and rare piece. It could be finished and placed in a Plexiglas display case but I preferred to display it as it is currently.

Only two of these were ever produced by Icons from 1995 to 2000. They were never offered to customers or the general public. Icons was the master license holder for Back to the Future prop replicas from 1997 until they closed their doors for good in Spring of 2000. The other BTTF 2 Mattel Hoverboard Icons produced was assembled and presented to Universal Studios for product approval. One of Steven Spielberg's top executives was so impressed with it that he requested to keep it and display it in his office at DreamWorks SKG.

  1. Wow! Icons really did have a unique vision that many years ago. Long before the current popularity of BTTF replicas. This would have been an amazing replica to own all those years ago. Thanks for preserving and sharing Fred !
